The Maasai people had been grazing their livestock in the open plains of eastern Mara Region, which they named “endless plains”, for around 200 years when the first European explorer, German Oscar Baumann, visited the area in 1892. The name “Serengeti” is an approximation of the word used by the Maasai to describe the area, siringet, which means “the place where the land runs on forever”. The park is usually described as divided into three regions: Serengeti Plains, western corridor and Northern Serengeti.

Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera within the area, is recognized by one private organization as one of the Africa. The main feature of the Ngorongoro Conservation Authority is the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. The crater, which formed when a large volcano exploded and collapsed on it two to three million years ago, is 610 meters (2,000 feet) deep and its floor covers 260 square kilometers (100 square miles). Estimates of the height of the original volcano range from 4,500 to 5,800 meters (14,800 to 19,000 feet) high.  The Ngorongoro Crater includes most of the animal species found in East Africa. Approximately 25,000 large animals, mostly ungulates, live in the crater.

Large animals in the crater include the black rhinoceros. There also are many other ungulates: the wildebeest, Burchell’s, the Grant’s, and Waterbuck occur mainly near Lerai Forest. There are no topis; Giraffe also are absent, possibly because of a lack of browse species. Cheetah, lions, African wild dog, and leopard are rarely seen. Although thought of as “a natural enclosure” for a very wide variety of wildlife, 20 per cent or more of the wildebeest and half the zebra populations vacate the crater in the wet season. Lake Magadi, a large lake in the southwest of the crater, is often inhabited by thousands of mainly Lesser Flamingoes.
